Nelson Dewey papers, 1818-1907 (bulk 1836-1889).

Papers, mainly 1836-1889, of Nelson Dewey, the first governor of Wisconsin and a resident of Lancaster and Cassville, Wisconsin. The papers primarily document real estate investments, both his own and others, and consist of correspondence, deeds, mortgages, and legal agreements, abstracts, lists, and financial record books. Client files contain records for individuals such as Gerrit V. Denniston, Joel Allen Barber, and Congressman Ben C. Eastman. Other individuals who appear in the business files include William A. Barstow, Ira Brunson, Nathaniel Dean, George Delaplaine, Cyrus Woodman, and Congressman Henry Hubbard. The only personal material consists of letters from his brother, James, in New York City; an inventory of Stonefield, Dewey's home at Cassville; receipts and checks documenting miscellaneous personal expenses; and diaries containing brief notations about travel and health, property memoranda, and detailed annual expense lists.
